Presuming that such a person as 'Mary' did actually exist, I think she'd be rather shocked by her 20th C depictions. Pale, dim looking, and Caucasian. The church has a lot to answer for. Sorry.
I'm fascinated by these depictions from a stand point of regional popular culture. (And I was raised Catholic, but have run screaming from its tenets/practices/abuses.)
