To and Fro

I've decided, on my one-mile walk each way to work through my urban neighborhood, to search out what I consider to be magic, or gifts from the universe. Once I started paying more attention, I realized that no searching is necessary: these gifts lay themselves in front of me in abundance.

This morning, my favorite was classical music -- a Strauss symphony is my best guess -- coming from a house. And that same house on the way home, with windows and door flung open wide on this first day of summer: drums & piano, live.

And one more thing: a man, about 35, walking his bike beside a young girl, and he was wearing a "Joshua Tree 1987 Tour" t-shirt. I'm guessing it's a relic from possibly his dad?

  1. It's good to be aware of such things.... and all for free,

  2. And these gifts are everywhere, at least I find them to be...the hummingbird that hovers outside our second-floor window with no flowers near, a next-door neighbor whose piano reminds me of the music encountered on your walk, the sky and what must be a powerful sea breeze this far inland every afternoon. The hits just keep on coming. xo

  3. ah, the sweetness of it all! You are on the right path.

There is a gent in my building, 2 doors down, who plays the sweetest saxophone. When I collect the mail or leave the building, I pass his door and am delighted.

To notice these things feeds the heart and soul.

  4. Lovely T. Go you. Music from a door or window - how that stops us in our tracks. When my son was in a metal band and played in our garage on a Sunday, we had some irate neighbours. With a band competition looming more practice was needed so they put out a notice to neighbours so they knew when the band was practising/ Oh there were complaints (still) but a former cop sent our son a card saying he thought it was great they had a passion for music, and a woman in her 80s said she danced past out garage when she heard the music playing. I reckon she was another T.

  6. Being able to see the miracles strewn in your path, T., will soften the pain after a while; being able to find joy in the ordinary gifts of life will give your heart strength and suppleness, as your two miles a day of walking will give your body flexibility and endurance. Brava! xo

  7. Your neighborhood sounds like a great place for a walk. I wouldn't mind running laps if I were to pass by a house that's welcome to such music.
