Underfoot

My mother would wax her kitchen floor late, the night before thanksgiving, all of us in bed. It was the only time she could be certain of no one making tracks across her gleaming floor. But me? I'll be lucky if I get the floor swept, much less mopped.

And do people really still wax floors? Mine is old-fashioned (but not old) vinyl composition tile, and could definitely take a wax coating, but lord, who could be bothered?! Yet I still judge a holiday by the cleanliness, or lack-thereof, of my kitchen floor.

It will be swept.

Will make an honest attempt at mopping.

But mop or no mop, our dinner Thursday is going to be damn good.

And that's enough by me.

  1. That's very weird. Is floor cleaning for Thanksgiving a bit like putting mince pies out for Santa at Christmas?

  2. Elizabeth, that's a very good question. All I know is that it involves a helluva lot of work.

  4. Cro, and all this time I thought that every good American did this!

  5. I remember my mom doing it too, tho she stopped at a certain point! I recall it requires some very large & loud device called a "buffer." The food's the thing--have a great Thanksgiving.

  7. this is where good ole products like, "Mop and Glo" come in! No waxing, just shine. I use it on vinyl floors after I mop them clean. It's the short cut, and old-fashioned folk would say I'm cheating, but what the hell.

    Enjoy your holiday!

  10. my husband uses Swiffer Wet-Jet. I remember one Thanksgiving long ago in a rented apt when I tried to mop behind the fridge. Somehow I broke the refrigerator. So the dessert course was drinking the melted chocolate haagen dasz, not bad. Happy Thanksgiving! sp
